
UMZ Production Association named after A.M. Makarov is located in the city of Dnepropetrovsk, the industrial center of Ukraine. For fifty years of operation the Association set up on the basis of motor-car factory has developed into high-capacity machine-building system of huge scientific and technical-production potential.
Started with manufacturing trucks in the post-war period the Factory successively have launched autoloaders, truck-cranes and "Amphibia" motor-cars manufacturing.
In the beginning of the fifties Dnepropetrovsk motor-car factory pioneered the series production of the first P-1, P-2 rockets developed by S. P. Korolyov; thus initiating the new stage of the Factory development - switching to space technologies designed for defense, science and economy development.
YuzhMash jointly with the Yuzhnoye State Design Office has developed several generations of long-range ballistic missiles, intercontinental missiles and super powerful carrier rockets. On the basis of the missiles developed the Strategic Missile Troops of the Soviet Union were raised.
Twelve Missiles Systems were created in all, including the first national mobile and stationary solid fuel missiles.
The intensive space engineering development started with launching the first Dnepropetrovsk satellite in 1962. Since that time about 400 space vehicles of different type have been developed and orbited.
The unique space vehicles and automatic orbiting station oriented to the Earth and the Sun, the devices designed for the World Ocean remote exploration and telecommunication satellite within the frames of national and international programs have been providing the scientist of the World with enormous volume of information thus contributing to the development of all the branches of industry and science.
The space research programs implementation required development of high-performance rocket carriers displaying the wide range of technical and working parameters.
Such rocket carriers were developed within the shortest possible time. The latest achievements of the advances space technologies realized in "Cyclone" and "Zenith" carriers determine the possibility of their multi-purpose and diversified application.
"Cyclone" rocket carrier is capable to launch on the low circular polar orbit the 4-ton load. The fully automated prelaunch cycle insures safety, reliability and efficiency of space vehicle launching and provides for the wide possibility of the system commercial usage.
"Zenith" rocket carrier is able to orbit the 12-ton load. The rocket is equipped with the 1 stage mid-flight kerosene-oxygen engine which is considered to be the most powerful in the world.
In the process of space-system engineering development YuzhMash Production Association and Yuzhnoye State Design Office experts developed and adopted series production of 11 types of mid-flight liquid fuel engines of missiles and rocket carriers with carrying capacity from 500 to 48,000 kg, 6 types of liquid fuel steering engines with traction from 5,000 to 29,000 kg.
The unique production and technical basis and high level of the expertise provide for high standards of the engineering solutions realized.
YuzhMash is a full-cycle enterprise manufacturing the main part of the spare parts and components, assembling and testing the units and products mainly with its own manufacturing-testing facilities.
The applied technologies deal with various branches of manufacturing, such as metallurgical, die forging, metal-working, tool-making, welding and assembling ones. A lot of technologies are the unique, "know-how" ones that have no analogues. For their development leading scientific-research organizations were attracted.
The metallurgy production allows for manufacturing precise casting blocks of ferrous, non-ferrous and titan casting, high-alloy steel and alloys with minimal further mechanical processing.
Over thirty kinds and ways of metals and alloys welding are used in welding engineering. The range of the welded metals include construction, stainless, low-alloy, acid-resistant, high-temperature steel and nickel, molybdenum, titanium, copper, aluminum and magnesium-based alloys. We widely apply electron-beam welding, laser welding, microplasmus welding, argon-ark welding, cold welding, friction and explosion welding.
When manufacturing BT6C and BT14 titanic spherical constructions 5-14 mm wide and 220-630 mm in diameter the original engineering procedures and equipment are used.
The modern bending equipment provides for processing diversified intricate-shaped billets made of Aмг6 type alloys and steels. The availability of hydraulic and mechanical presses, automatic presses makes it possible to forge stainless steel, aluminum and titanium alloys any kind of asymmetric details, semi-sphere-, cylinder- and box-shaped details.
Large details are manufactured by explosion and electro-hydroimpulsive forging techniques.
High-temperature connection soldering shows excellent results when applied in complex main units and constructions. The soldered connections are resistant to mechanical effects, vibrations, corrosive media and provides for hermiticity under service conditions up to 1x10 -5.
In the context of conversion the Association has been searching its way to most effective usage of its potential by means of science intensive industrial engineering arrangement.
The excellent properties of the UMZ multi-purpose tractors are acknowledged in many countries when used for ploughing and cultivating, sawing and harvesting as well as road building and transportation. The improved motor resource and roadhold, efficient production and maneuverability under power rating equal to 60, 80 and 100 h.p for different models and easy maintenance contribute to their expedience in various climate zones.
The comfortable and reliable UMZ trolleybuses of several modifications run the numerous routes in Ukraine. Their basic performance characteristics comply with the best foreign models. Displaying the design unity, rational form and aesthetic configuration the one- and double-section trolleybuses contribute to the city environment improvement and unload the arterial roads of small towns and big cities.
Together with the Czech experts UMZ currently started manufacturing ТЗ-M tram-cars which technical and ergonomic parameters meet the requirements of the relevant European models.
The Association jointly with Windenergo Company has developed the production process of 110 kW wind-driven powerplant providing environmentally friendly sources of electric power for Ukraine and other countries.
The Association has been closely cooperating with lots of foreign partners under mutually beneficial terms taking parts in such large-scale programs as Sea Launch and others. Sea Launch Project provides for 30 satellites to be orbited before 2005. "Zenith" is recognized by foreign experts the best rocket in the world to be launched from the sea platform.
Many years' experience of international cooperation got the stable and dynamic nature. The association has been participating in implementation of more than 10 international projects.
"Dnepr" Russian-Ukrainian carrier rocket with carrying capacity of 4 tons developed on the basis of SS-18 intercontinental missile is assumed to be prospective from the point of view of international cooperation. A great number of satellites providing the operation of global computer networks and communication channels are planned to be orbited by "Dnepr".
The profound experience in manufacturing the most sophisticated rocket systems, units and assemblies, design and technological developments, the outcomes of investigations and testing, the high professional competence of the developers and producers contribute to the technical progress both in Ukraine and abroad.
